Boosting the participation in sports of youth and adults with intellectual disabilities: Insights from Special Olympics

Date: 4 July 2018
Time: 14:00 - 15:30
Room: Wicklow Meeting Room 1

2018 marks the 50th Anniversary of Special Olympics. It is now present in 178 countries globally and 58 countries in Europe/Eurasia. It involves an estimated half million athletes and over 30,000 volunteer coaches in Europe/Eurasia. The UN Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (2006), Article 30.5 promotes their rights to inclusion in mainstream sports. Likewise the UNESCO charter (2014) notes in Article 1 that “Inclusive, adapted and safe opportunities to participate in physical education, physical activity and sport must be available to all human beings, notably … persons with disabilities”.

Dynamic Movement Deficits after Concussion and their Potential Consequences

Date: 5 July 2018
Time: 14:00 - 15:30
Room: Wicklow Meeting Room 1

Concussion results in measurable symptom, cognitive, and balance deficits. Many common balance assessments rely on static and visually-rated paradigms. Intra-tester variability and poor reliability have been observed using such metrics to track balance recovery following concussion. Dual-task movement control deficits during dynamic tasks (such as gait) have been observed to outlast traditional static balance recovery metrics. This is concerning, as it suggests there may be lingering motor control maladaptation’s currently not accounted during typical post-concussion assessments. Athletes returning to high level athletic competition while still suffering from motor control deficits may be at increased risk for sustaining musculoskeletal injuries.
